03-17-07  happy st. paddys day!!! Erin go Brauh!

hello and welcome! if you are just joining us here at jetty fishery.com we hope you enjoy the site and in turn find your way to Jetty Fishery on the beautiful Nehalem bay on the 0regon coast!  Well spring break is in full swing and the weather has awesome the past week, but rumors of it changing are circulating.   The crabbing is slow yet, however there are consistently people bringing back dinner, thought they might have had to supplement their catch as we are talking 1-5 crab, but hey, you could be sitting in that cubicle at work instead right???  A couple of options for additional food gathering activities include bay clams (there are at least 3 fantastic spots right near here), the razor clamming on the north ocean beaches. (something everyone must try at least once!, and there are great bunches of Mussels to be gathered.  Mussels have become a much heralded shellfish to prepare in some of the finer "cuisine eating establishments"   --- heed not to that, rather that they are very tasty!!  So, spring into break with a visit down to the Jetty ..     P.S. == not so sure about the ole tent in the early spring temperatures?  If you haven't seen, check out the Jetty Guest Cabins now available for rent!!

What a glorious week here at the coast !! No rain, some more than occasionaly sun, the bay has been that great sea green/blue color all day, and last weekend the one boat rental we had got 6 crab.  Hey ....it was a start!   There has not been much action on the bay this week to really give a good indication of whats going on, but with a great weather forecasted, and just general hunches, I would gather to say that there is a more than likely chance there are crab to be caught out there....Of course there is the "if only..."  that is if only the tides were more co-operative, there is the high tides right before daylight, then outgoing till the afternoon, they are substantial, but not completely unfishable.  Sometimes that just narrows down the choices of spots to find them, and make it easier to concentrate  the efforts........ either way, it sure beats sitting at home watching re-runs of Dog the bountiful hunter or for Pete's sake starting on that project list that has been hanging on the board since '05!  (By the way who is this Pete fella and why do we do everything for his sake?? )   Ok folks, there are boats in he water and bait in the bucket... time to start out this season right!  Get the kids, dogs, neighbor cat, (oops--no bettter not -- might be to tempting to use for bait..)  and yourself loaded in that crabbing Jalopy of yours and get out here !!.

HELLO !!!      well here it is, nearly the end of January and finally some life out of the current report.  I will refer back to a comment I used earlier in the salmon season regarding my mother's advice regarding ..."if you can't say something nice...... it's best not said....."      In short, winds, rain, abnormally high swell, power outages, more wind, power outages, abnormally cold temps., snow, freezing rain, and that is just the weather scene the past 9 weeks!  So, as things seem to be calming down, I will as I heartily knock on all wood in sight, say that the currnent report shall once again be current, and the conditions in the bay are pretty much day to day right now, your best bet is to give us a call~1-503-368-5746  or 1-800-821-7697.

Friday, DECEMBER8th, 2006

WELL AFTER A MONTH OF FLOODS, SEVERE COLD, RAIN, SNOW, MUD, HAIL, 107mph wind gusts things have calmed to a dull roar out here on the coast.  With a combination of a week with out rain, knock on wood, and some large tides to flush the bay out,  CRABBING IS BACK!!!!  **  Now I do say this with reservations however. Those who are used to flying by the seat of someone's pants and getting here whenever are going to have to STOP>>>>>READ A TIDE BOOK >>>>>AND WOULDN'T EVEN HURT TO GIVE US A CALL.   Because the wrong timing here and actually the crab will seem non-existent.   On the large out-going tides, its best to stop up at the Jetty Crossing and enjoy the seafood chowder and a pastami sandwich.     ok, well give us a call or e-mail, I will respond asap, and will update here more frequently.--now that we have crawled out of our caves and have actually had days nicer than most in June, and even July this week!!!

Friday, Nov. 10th, 2006

After a couple days of mild conditions, in fact yesterday being better than most of June with sunny skies and mellow water conditions, today started with the strong winds again, and now the rain, pretty much washing away the glimmer of hope for a major dry spell to clear out the water conditions.  Yesterday's incoming tide was able to thwart the mudflow of the Nehalem for perhaps 90 minutes top, and only near the mouth was there signs of the green seawater advancing into the bay.  I am afraid it will take more than this to give us a chance at any decent crabbing.   Not to say there are those who won't give it a chance... last I heard the annual gathering of the" 300+ crab/trip, katch them all" Andersen clan was still planning to try, and the Crystal Springs waterboys might make the trip anyway.... so it will not be completely lonely this weekend.  On a good note, if nothing else -- the beach combing is awesome .... the record rainfall and hurricane winds stirred things up and out so there is constantly new "treasures" to be found on all the banks, beaches, and jetty's.  Definitely makes a boat ride to the other side well worth it.  Check out the live web cam, send me a message, or call the office if you would like more info... better still, for immediate updates, latest news and more join the Jetty Newswire, see details on the link above..... thanks,  barry                        message:   barryje@jettyfishery.com

TUESDAY, NOV. 7th

AS YOU MAY BE AWARE THE TILLAMOOK COUNTY REGION WAS HIT HARD WITH A STORM THE WAS A RESIDUAL FROM A RECENT TYPHOON, THE TILLAMOOK AREA AND WILSON RIVER WERE SOME OF THE HARDEST HIT.  WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO NOT HAVE ANY DAMAGE OR FLOODING HERE AT JETTY FISHERY.  BEING THE CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE OCEAN HAS ACTUALLY HELPED IN THIS INSTANCE AS THE WATER HAS A OUTLET TO DRAIN TO RATHER THAN FLOOD.  WE SEND OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS OUT TO THOSE WHO HAVE LOST HOMES AND PROPERTY.  STAY TUNED, MORE UPDATES WILL\OLLOW.................................

  ............Monday 11-16-06

Well last I looked outside, everything seemed to still be there, at least I could see all the docks, boats, and most of the campers, though a few perhaps wise souls abandoned camp when the lightning started firing away.    Other that a pre-winter rain/wind/hail/thunder/lighting/sunny 24 hour period, it looks as though after today our great weather will continue.  The storm should have had a enhancing effect on the fishing, though it has been super this week.....and the crabbing?   well not enough rain to adversely effect it, but the cold wind and last week's flushing negative tides might just solve the nasty seaweed flows that hampered both crabbing and fishing last week,..,... so, after conferring with the magic 8-ball, "signs point to yes"  Its the start of another great week on the Nehalem....

  NOVEMBER 4, 2006

ok ..... so this is the time of year when things like the fishing report get put on the back burner, most of you have limited out, the rest just figure the fishing is done for the year, well someone didn't tell the fish that.   Yes, they are still out there, nice and bright, and for those few souls that have been out the success has been good.  If you happen to be Sean from Garibaldi it has been awesome.  Sean had something to prove I think when a friend from Alaska was visiting this week, catching doubles back to back nights, with some of the best late fall weather around.  And well rental boat # 11 had a challenger in #14, which was the vessel of choice for a nice 26# fish, caught, fought and landed alone by gentleman who did the exact same thing in a Jetty boat last season.   Of course things have changed since our Halloween Eve picture perfect night.   And change with a vengeance -- some of the wind gusts reached 40 here at the Jetty, needless to say the fishing might be grand for the sea lion still cruising the bay, but for the other fishermen that share the Nehalem waters  -- even the toughest have skipped this storm.  Well, unless drastic changes happen I think that the 2006 year in review report that I am compiling will close this rookie session, thanks to all who happened by here.  I would still love to hear any great stories, or comments from anyone.   Send an e-mail to the fishing link above, or directly to me here: barryje@jettyfishery.com

  SEPTEMBER 26 REPORT

Where has the fishing report been?? well my mom always said .... "if you can't say something nice then........"  so, yes the fishing was that bad....was being the key word.  ok, here is a brief rundown.... mon, tues, weds...rain, cold, no fish, no bites, disgruntled fishermen abound, .... thurs, little better, still lots of folks hanging up the rods for the year and going out to sight in the rifle or getting the christmas lights hung on the house early for a change......friday, well .... the weather was better .... saturday ..... hold on baby, here come the fish,......... sunday: couldn't write a more perfect script: sunny, gorgeous day, no wind ....fish Gods were smiling ... Monday, Tuesday...... WOW !!  weather PERFECT, fishing...great!! and did I mention the weather??? .......Even ole' "effing Darrell"  shed the standard flannel and was wearing a T-shirt upon returning with Henry in rental boat #11 with -- 4 salmon, 1 lingcod, and released TWO 40 lb+ halibut....(regulations changed and the halibut season closed for the rest of 2006)  The also had one native silver caught that was dutifully released, bringing the total to 8 fish caught and either landed or released for only 5 hours of fishing..... not to shabby!!

Speaking of that rental boat # 11 .. it has brought in eight salmon in 5 outings this year!!  This weeks participants in the lucky boat catch were:  Andrea and Josh Malone joined Kyle and Mark for a super outing and nice fish on Sunday.  (saturday night bingo wasn't as productive)  ... Mr.Phil Chick, yes the formerly of Jetty Fishery fame Phil Chick, added a couple of nice fish on Monday morning while his boat was in for servicing)  (DVD player was acting up again).... and then, with a flash, a crash, and a few, ok more than a few, 4 letters words flying, the "Michigan Man" Kirk, swooped out and nailed a nice 30+ pounder on Monday, finally the Darrell and Henry show finished out a nice 5 days for lucky rental boat #11..... (available today....call to reserve!!)

Well, shameless promo comlete, I shall let the rest of the story be told in pictures, nice fish!  If you have some pictures to share, would like a copy of one of our pictures, or just want to comment, send a note to:  barryje@jettyfishery.com   or info@jettyfishery.com  thanks!

  SEPTEMBER 11 REPORT

A slow week to report here on the Nehalem, as far as the fishing.  Now the water was far from slow, with nearly  a 10 ft displacement on the afternoon tide.   The big water brought about the irritating side effect of seaweed, logs, lawn chairs and other assorted debris cluttering the water and making the catch even more difficult.  The change of weather, combined with the heavy flow tides brought the swell up to more than comfortable out on the open waters for most, slowing the halibut catch as well.  So, using your best Colombo skills, one doesn't need to ask that "ahhh.....just one more thing" to see it just wasn't happening.  Ok, someone forgot to tell the "Bite Me" boys, who again brought in a very nice pair on Saturday, click here to see  and a few others that hit the high slack tides just right. Perhaps we all need to resort to a tactic confidentially shared last week after one boats success at the very last moment.  It was the last waning hours of light, they were all out of bait, in fact one had to recycle a bad cut plug just to be in the water.  The hook supply was gone, the cooler was reduced to a full recycle bin, reputation and pride were at stake, and the only thing in the well was a fish that was small enough to have a cute name, be fed before school, and later in life given a proper burial by flush.... with one pass left, out came the M & M's ....several bags of them, and instead of testing the "melts in your mouth not your hands" slogan, they all went overboard, the red ones, blues ones, yea, even the green ones.  Suddenly..  BANG!  ....wouldn't ya know it was a hit.  That quite not good enough to prove the colorful candy had an effect, there shortly was another BANG!  and with the last out in the bottom of the 9th, it was a double.  Twin 30 pounders brought in, redeeming the day spent almost for naught.   So, there it is ---the secret unveiled right here, and now I might just have to be roomies with Salmon Rushdie because of it...(after I get my cut from Hershey's for the shameless M & M promo of course)  Over an out for now,  I will have a brief update on Thursday this week as the tides are looking much better and this will give a little window as to what the weekend may look like.   Once again, send me a note if you have a picture, comment, suggestion, dirty joke, donation, complaint, (ah, no wait, on second thought ...all complaints go to: kelly@jettyfishery.com), or any questions.   You can reach me at barryje@jettyfishery.com or info@jettyfishery.com     thanks,. B

SEPTEMBER 5 REPORT

WELL. THINGS WERE A LITTLE SLOWER ON MONDAY.  HOWEVER THERE WERE STILL QUITE A FEW FISH BROUGHT IN, JUST NOT AS MANY.   SOME OF THIS WAS DUE TO THE SMALLER NUMBER OF PEOPLE STICKING AROUND FOR THE AFTERNOON, WHICH IT SEEMS IS WHEN THE MAJORITY OF SALMON ARE BEING HOOKED, AND ANOTHER REASON IS THE CONDITIONS AT THE MOUTH AND FURTHER OUT WERE A BIT ROUGH YESTERDAY, LIMITING THE HALIBUT FISHING TO VERY FEW.  WE SHALL SEE HOW THE WEEK PROGRESSES, TODAY THERE HAS BEEN TOUCHES OF RAIN, WITH MORE IN THE HORIZON, WHICH CAN JUST HELP THE PROSPECT OF A GREAT WEEK OF FISHING.  PLEASE SEND ME A NOTE IF I MISSED YOUR CATCH ON HERE, YOU HAVE SOME PICS TO SHARE, OR HAVE QUESTIONS....... LOVE TO HEAR ANY SUGGESTIONS AS WELL, WE ARE JUST STARTING OUT THIS FORUM SO COMMENTS CERTAINLY HELP!!  REACH US AT : barryje@jettyfishery.com   OR info@jettyfishery.com   THANKS ALL!

 SEPTEMBER 3 REPORT

Finally, a great report out of the Nehalem bay estuary on the salmon fishing,  well over 50 salmon, at least 25 halibut, and some superb limits of crab came thru the Fishery today, with some notable catches of: Mike Sturgeon (Mr.. consistency this year, whom I have forgotten to mention before, has secured a 44, 36 and several other nice fish, and again today was one of the first to land a fish)  Darrell Jones stepped up to my challenge of two weeks ago and saw his crew land a lovely quartet of a 46, 30, and a couple of high 20.s  ( click here for picThe Derkson's had a nice 63 pound halibut to add to the other 3 hali's they landed, Engels got into the action but had some technical difficulties with some dull hooks, (or was if dull hookers?)  And I saw Rich ROmig either trying to make some tips cleaning fish for someone, or maybe he actually caught a couple of halibut as well.   Well I am sure there are more reports to yet be posted, stay tuned.  Tomorrow will bring another report and our new bulletin board should be online, although I must check out the karaoke event here for a bit.

    AUGUST 20 ..2006 REPORT.....

ALL RIGHT, SO WHAT IS SO BAD ABOUT CATCHING HALIBUT?  ROUND ABOUT THE TIME I WAS FINISHING UP THE AUG. 11TH REPORT, THE DIRKSEN'S CREW HAD THEIR 8TH ONE.  TOM AND JERRY, DUTIFULLY CHAPERONED BY KELLY, CERTAINLY HAVE HAD THE FEVER, AND ON THE OTHER END OF THE TENTING GROUNDS, ROXY AND ISAAC FINISHED UP THEIR 10 DAY STINT WITH A COUPLE MORE NICE FISH.  THE STORY ON THE SALMON? WELL, WORD IS (A QUIET WORD) THAT WE MIGHT NEED JUST A TOUCH OF RAIN TO HELP STEER THE FISH OUR WAY.   THE CATCH IS STILL LIGHT AND SPOTTY, GOOD IF YOUR A DALMATIAN, NOT SO GOOD FOR A FALL RUN.  PATIENCE.... I STILL THINK ITS ALL JUST RUNNING LATE THIS YEAR....... MEANWHILE, THE PERCH FISHING IS STILL GREAT, AS WELL AS THE HALIBUT, HOWEVER I DID NOTICE THE WHISTLE BUOY QUITE A BIT LAST NIGHT,  WITH ROUGH CONDITIONS POSSIBLE, EVEN THE HALIBUT WOULD BE OUT OF REACH.  ONE REMINDER FOR ANY OF YA'LL THAT DO VENTURE OUT INTO THE OPEN OCEAN WATERS..... THE WATERS ARE CLOSED FOR ALL CRABBING, NOT JUST COMMERCIAL BOATS.  THEY ARE WATCHING QUITE KEENLY, SO KEEP THE CRAB GEAR INSIDE THE BAY.....

    AUGUST 11 ..2006 REPORT.....

BY NOW MOST OF THE NORTHWEST HAS HEARD ABOUT "THE HALIBUT HAPPENINGS"  .... YES IT IS A STRANGE OCCURRENCE THAT HAS DEVELOPED RIGHT OUTSIDE THE MOUTH OF THE NEHALEM HERE, IN JUST AS LITTLE AS 50 to 120' OF WATER, THE  SALMON FISHERMEN ARE HAULING IN THE  'HALIBUT ON ALMOST A DAILY BASIS.  OF COURSE, SINCE IT IS UNDER THE 40 FATHOM DEPTH, THE CURRENT REGULATIONS ALLOW YOU TO KEEP ANY SIZE, SEVEN DAYS PER WEEK (see: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/finfish/halibut/hbtregsmap2006_current.asp) ....BUT EVEN WITH THAT THERE ARE STILL SOME BIG BOYS OUT THERE AS WELL, JUST ASK DEMAR WHO LANDED A 92 POUNDER' ON MONDAY THE 7TH, (scroll down) AND LAST WEEK MAX BANNER OUT FOR HIS YEARLY VISIT FROM IDAHO BROUGHT IN A 63 POUNDER' (click here)......(AND NEVER BROKE A SWEAT) ...IASIC AND ROXY HAVE BECOME "HALLEY" PRO'S, GARY DAVIS PICKED UP A 44 POUNDER', AND OF COURSE OVER IN THE M*A*S*H 4077 TENT HALIBUT WAS ONLY ONE OF THE SEAFOOD CHOICES, AS THE ANNUAL INVASION OF THE NICKS, RICHES, AND FRIENDS BROUGHT IN A RAIN OF FISH, CLAMS, AND CRAB.
